Village Eyes Bolander Building's Future

With an aging building and under-utilized facilities, committee looks at options to sell, move, or renovate Bolander.

Village officials are discussing what to do with the Bolander Building and property on Winchester Road. The building needs capital improvements that may not be justified with the property's low usage level, said Village Administrator Kevin Bowens.

“We wanted to touch base and make sure we’re on the right track with where we’re going with this,” Bowens said during the Parks and Recreation Committee meeting Tuesday.

The property could be sold for between $1.8 million to $2 million, and there has been interest in developing it as a multifamily residential property, according to Bowens.

The committee, however, was concerned about where to transition staff, programs and equipments that are housed on the property.

“Directionally it makes sense,” said Village Trustee Richard Moras during the meeting. “But there are good, quality activities that go on in the building, and we have to make sure that we keep that intact and nurture that same atmosphere.”

Staff members discussed the possibility of moving some programs to , the ice rink to near the sledding hill and warming building, and will look into the cost and location of building a storage building.

Acquired by the village in 1997, the Bolander property houses a public ice rink and public green space for area sports team practices.

The rest of the Bolander property is used to house some Parks and Recreation staff, a computer training room, and a dance studio where dance programs are held.

The village stores many Christmas items, equipment for its Safety Town program, Village Band equipment, and other miscellaneous items at a storage building and basement on the property.
