Village to Purchase Additional Road Salt

Libertyville trustees voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve the purchase of about 1,351 tons of additional road de-icing salt.

Mayor Terry Weppler explained that the $70,000 purchase is necessary because as of Jan. 4, village crews had already responded to 15 snow events this season.

"These events have been of the 'Alberta Clipper' variety, which is generated in Canada and impacts snowfall in the Great Lakes region and produces long-duration/small accumulation snowfall that requires more salt than a normal short-duration snowfall," according to village board meeting documents.

The salt purchase will be paid for with Motor Fuel Tax funds.
