Dozens Gather for Food Drive Collection

Libertyville High School students form a human food chain to send donations to Libertyville Township Food Pantry.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Nov. 23, executive board members, teacher coordinators, and student volunteers formed a human chain to move boxes filled with food and goods from the school’s auditorium to a moving truck in the parking lot. The event marked the end of the school’s annual food drive that begins in October each year led by the school executive board and benefiting the Libertyville Township Food Pantry.

“It’s the one thing that student council does that benefits the community,” said Erin Coburn, president of Libertyville High School Junior Executive Board. “We plan dances and do a lot of other fun stuff, but this is all for the community. We see all of these boxes here, and see just how much we can do, and that’s the most fulfilling thing about it.”

“The winning classroom donated over a 1,000 cans,” said executive board Treasurer Madi Stoneman. “So they won $300. Second place won $200, and third place won $100.”

According to school coordinators, the donations were down this year, signaling that next year’s drive may be revamped.

The collection was taken to the Libertyville Township Food Pantry, which benefits community members in need. The food drive is the pantry’s largest annual donation.
