LHS to Celebrate Commencement at Sears Centre

When Dana Humen started crafting her graduation speech, she didn't know that a couple of months later her speech would end up being completely different from her first draft.

She ultimately wrote four versions of her speech. It's fitting, then, that Humen's speech focuses on the concept of revision. That's the topic she'll talk to her fellow graduates about at tonight's Libertyville High School graduation ceremony at the Sears Centre.

Humen said her speech is about "making mistakes and learning from them, about how we'll revise our stories as we go along. You have to make mistakes to grow as a person."

Humen, the senior class president, and Travis Wegren will serve as the graduation speakers. 

Wegren was chosen by a committee after applying to be a speaker. His speech is about how the past four years have gone by in a flash. Wegren has done a lot of technical production and behind-the-scenes work with the school's CAT-TV webcast, so his speech was inspired by the flash of a camera.

"It's about how we've grown as people and how quickly high school comes and goes," he said.

It has been a busy four years for both students. Humen has been involved with Student Council all four years, serving as the president of both the junior and senior classes. She is also a member of National Honor Society and volunteers outside of school.

Wegren, too, is a member of National Honor Society. He also volunteers at his church.

Both he and Humen said they'll miss the LHS community after graduation.

"I'm going to miss the people the most," said Humen.

Wegren added that he'll miss "the caring relationships with teachers and friends we've made."

Looking ahead, Wegren plans to study political science and Spanish at DePauw University. Humen will study journalism at Miami of Ohio.
