Jay Goldberg, clinical associate professor of biomedical engineering at Marquette University and Libertyville resident, has been awarded the Engineering Education Excellence Award by the National Society of Professional Engineers.
The award was presented to Goldberg at the 2012 NSPE Annual Meeting, recently held in San Diego. The award recognizes engineering faculty who have demonstrated the ability to link engineering education with professional practice. Recipients must be licensed professional engineers and have a faculty appointment in an engineering program accredited by ABET, which accredits college and university programs in the disciplines of applied science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.
Goldberg stated that he was pleased to be nationally recognized for his work. "It's an external validation of what I have been doing at Marquette to prepare students for their careers and a confirmation of its value to the engineering profession. I was very excited that NSPE felt that my approach to linking professional practice to engineering education is unique and worthy of the award," he said.
The director of the Healthcare Technologies Management Program in the College of Engineering, Goldberg draws on his 14 years of industry experience to develop curriculum to help engineering students prepare for their professional lives after graduation.
During his 13 years at Marquette, he has helped create a class, titled "The Business of Biomedical Engineering," that teaches first-year biomedical engineering students about the design process, the medical device industry, new product development, finance and marketing and he has developed a junior-level design course that allows students to observe firsthand how medical technology is used in operating rooms and other areas of a hospital and identify inefficiencies in order to design better technology.
"I enjoy helping shape the next generation of engineers and preparing students for successful careers," said Goldberg.
