Libertyville's Will Maes Heads to State Geo Bee Again

This is the second time the eighth-grader at Highland Middle School will head to the state tournament competition.

Highland Middle School eighth-grader Will Maes will compete on the state level of the National Geographic Bee on March 30 at the College of DuPage.

“After winning the school bee, students must take a qualifying test,” said Erin Wyatt, the learning center director at the school. “Will scored in the top 100 in the state to earn a place in the Illinois competition. This is the second time in the four years that I have coordinated the Geographic Bee at Highland that we have had a student make it to the state tournament competition. And that student has been Will for the last two years.”

Maes qualified to compete on the state level after winning the National Geographic Bee at his middle school. Maes also won the school competition last year and went to state.
