Local Youths to Participate in 'Relay for Life'

Forty-two teams from Green Oaks, Libertyville, Mundelein and Vernon Hills have raised more than $24,000.

Nearly 500 youths from the Green Oaks, Libertyville, Mundelein and Vernon Hills areas are expected to participate in the "Relay for Life of GLMV Youth" event Saturday evening through Sunday morning at the Libertyville Sports Complex.

As of late Monday, 42 teams totaling 483 people had signed up for the event, which will serve as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The teams have raised just over $24,554 as of Monday.

“On May 22, the American Cancer Society celebrates 100 years of saving lives from cancer and creating a world with more birthdays. It’s the progress we’ve made together—as a community, as volunteers, as survivors and as leaders—that has helped us reach this incredible milestone with tremendous success,” said Alicia Wren, American Cancer Society event organizer. “By lending your support to GLMV’s Youth Relay event this year, you’ll be lending your support to the Society’s efforts to finish the fight and bring an end to cancer as we know it.”

The team that has brought in the most money so far is the Vernon Hills Varsity Lacrosse and Friends team, with $3,070 raised. The top individual participant as of late Monday is Samuel Glover, who is a member of the Vernon Hills Varsity Lacrosse and Friends team. He has raised $1,650. His personal goal was $1,500.

Participants will have plenty of activities to enjoy throughout the night, including a live band performance, a Mr. Relay Runway, Bozo Buckets, a dance-off and a Baggo tournament. The evening will also include a luminaria ceremony and a Fight Back ceremony. There will also be themed laps throughout the night.
