School District Honors Cook Park Librarians

Libertyville Elementary School District 70 honored Cook Memorial Public Library staff with the Character and Leadership Award.

The , along with the school administrators and educators, continue to set “Character Education” as a goal for the Libertyville learning community.

Each school year begins with “character” and “leadership” as goals that drive district actions, programs, services and curriculum. Through the efforts of the District 70 Character Counts Committee, teachers, community members and students eagerly begin to find ways to integrate the foundations of good character education throughout lives and community.   

For the third consecutive year, the school district presented a Character Counts Community Service Award. This year staff recommended people for the award and members of the Character Counts committee selected the honoree.

The Character and Leadership Award was presented “in honor of exemplary character, leadership and service” during a Dec. 19 Board of Education meeting after Learning Center director’s from the schools recommended staff for both the Children’s Department and Young Adult Services.  Members of the Children’s Department receiving the award included Jan Hastings, Heather Beverley and Rob Eckmann. Members of the Young Adult Services receiving the award included former District 70 Board of Education member Ellen Jennings and Eileen Sullivan.  

“Thank you for all that you do for our students and the community,” Supt. Guy Schumacher said when handing out the awards with teacher Dale List.

The library members were recognized for addressing the needs of the learning community, supporting the District 70 school staffs with resources, suppy a host of books for English Language Learners during a special District 70 Bilingual Family Game and Reading Night, inviting school administrators to read, attending Career Day at Rockland School, managing the temporary move to a smaller site during a major renovation at the main library flawlessly and – above all, “motivating and instilling a love of reading.”

Members of the Character Counts! Committee include Sue Warfel, Conna Rech, Kim Zilch, Gwen Travelstead, List, Mara Battaglia, Alan Esser, Michele Hernandez, Lordenso Cervantes and Kathy Dinger.
