Students, Principal Say Farewell to School

Tuesday marked the last day of school for students—and the last day they'll have Erik Youngman as their principal.

As a steady stream of students passed by, Copeland Manor Principal Erik Youngman gave some high-fives and hugs, and wished everyone a happy summer.

Tuesday marked the last day of school for Copeland students, and it was celebrated with the usual fanfare: applause from parents and teachers as the students exited the building. But a lot of the applause was also for Youngman, as the day also marked Youngman's final day as principal. He'll now be the Libertyville District 70 director of curriculum and instruction.

Youngman led the students, along with retiring teachers Donna Brannstrom, Jill Leffleman and Jan Wagner, out of the building early Tuesday afternoon.

"It's difficult," Youngman said of leaving Copeland Manor. "But it was a good opportunity that came up. I will miss the students."

Youngman said it was nice to see the students' emotions and the "sincereness in their words" during a recognition ceremony held at the school Tuesday.

He added that he'll definitely be visiting Copeland Manor, along with all of the district schools, in his new role.

Lori Poelking, principal of South Elementary School in Des Plaines, was chosen by the District 70 Board to be the new principal at Copeland.
