Watson Invited to Join Phi Beta Kappa

Ashley Watson of Libertyville, a student in the Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences, has been invited to join Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the United States.

"Invitation to membership in Phi Beta Kappa is highly selective, open to only the very best students in arts and sciences disciplines," said Larry D. Singell, Jr., dean of the IU College of Arts and Sciences and member of Phi Beta Kappa. "I congratulate Ashley on being elected to this elite society. This is truly an honor of life-long significance."

Election to Phi Beta Kappa is based solely on academic achievement and is limited to students majoring in liberal arts and sciences. Only about 10 percent of all U.S. colleges and universities have Phi Beta Kappa chapters; among these elite institutions, only about 10 percent of arts and sciences students qualify for election to Phi Beta Kappa. Nationwide, only about one percent of all college seniors are invited to join Phi Beta Kappa each year. Indiana University's chapter, Gamma of Indiana, was founded in 1911. Those students inducted by Gamma of Indiana this year join 17 U.S. Presidents, 38 U.S. Supreme Court Justices, and one hundred and 36 Nobel laureates as members of Phi Beta Kappa.
