Rockland School first-graders launch balloons to celebrate reading.

To celebrate reading, Rockland first-graders held a massive and colorful helium balloon launch May 25 at their school.

The launch actually celebrates that more than 45 first-graders have learned to read this school year. During the event, the students formed a circle, released the balloons and then regrouped in the circle.

''The launch signifies that each student has now become a Rockland Reader,'' said teacher Cheryl Crenshaw. Before a student can release a balloon, they each had to read aloud to Principal Jeff Knapp.
