Will Maes Wins Geo Bee for Second Consecutive Year

Eighth-grader was recently crowned the school champion of National Geographic Bee for the second year in a row at .

The nationwide contest sponsored by National Geographic Magazine tests students’ knowledge of geography. Preliminary competitions was held in the classrooms at schools to determine two semi finalists from each class.

The final round for students was held in December with Andy Liu being named school champion, said Learning Center Director Erin Carr. Nathan Schleiden was awarded second place and Thomas Hubbard was listed in third place. Other semi-finalists included Keith Allen, Amy Almer, Lina El Kouhen, Marek Fackert, Joey Hampton, Cecily Hetzel, David Kerber, Charlie Stahnke and Dylan Trott.

The final round for students this month resulted in Timmy Keating being named champion with Brendan Rattin being the runner up. Other semi-finalists were Katherine Haidvogel, Ben Leonard, Melissa Kinsley, Thomas Pearson, Mary Wetterling, Ryan Damenti, Megan Hanson and Amanda Gourley.

Copeland’s and Adler’s fourth- and fifth-graders participated in a preliminary competition of the National Geographic Bee by answering oral questions on geography.

Semi-finalists included Nick Berklan, Niklas Montag, Griffin Murphy, Alexander Dzierozynski, Kate Roleck, Kyle Patterson, Kristopher Kovatch, Nick Anderson, Mari Fazekas, Matt Franz, Henry Lee, Emily Malecha, Tori Thorns, Nick Zoellick, Jesse Ou, Tara Schneider, Chloe Vance, Adrian Metcalf, Emma Ryan, Jacob Rasmussen, and Brian Vickers.

The school champions advance to the next level of competition, a written examination to determine state competitors. The school champions will be eligible to win the national championship and its first prize, a $25,000 college scholarship.
