Wrestler Miller and gymnast Herchenbach place in state; unbeaten girls basketball team heads to the sectional.

As the winter season closes, it's time to salute a few successful athletes from , and prepare to see how far the unbeaten girls hoops team can go from here.

Luke Miller's senior season of wrestling netted 36 victories. Maybe more importantly, there is that fifth-place medal for him and his team to feel good about.

Wrestling completed this weekend in Champaign and Miller (215) was the school's top finisher.

Gymnastics: Another senior left a state tournament on a good note. Gymnast Leah Herchenbach received a strong mark from the chief judge at the state tourney in Palatine on Saturday. That paved the way to a 10th place showing in floor exercise.

On Friday, she tried her hand at vault. Herchenbach stood in 23rd place in the all-around heading to Saturday's final round.

Girls Basketball: What's the old saying. You can't beat a team three times in a season. How about four times?

Of course you can beat a team three times, four times and many more if your team is better than the other team.

The Mundelein Sectional kicks off on Monday night.  Round four between Zion-Benton (23-6) and  Libertyville (29-0) is the only game of the night at Mundelein. Take away those three losses to Libertyville and the Zee-Bees have only three losses.

It's Juanita Robinson and Octavia Crump for the Zee-Bees and Savannah Trees, Kaca Savatic, Olivia Wilcox, Nicole Kruckman and Alex Haley for the unbeaten Wildcats.

The Wildcats have already won the NSC Conference. Libertyville's team is in the school record book for most wins and most wins in a row.

For the second time this season, Libertyville beat Prospect. That came last Thursday in the regional title game at Deerfield. The Knights were the first and 29th victim of  Libertyville's campaign. Trees had 13 points and Savatic added 10 points in the 48-32 win. Kerry Risley also checked in off the bench to add 10 points.

The winner of Monday's game returns to Mundelein for the sectional title game on Thursday night. The winner of MSL teams Barrington and Fremd will be the foe.

Boys Basketball: These Wildcats are coming home for regional play. The Libertyville Regional kicks off on Monday night (Feb. 28). The Wildcats host Palatine that night. If the Cats survive they get another game at home as Barrington will be town.

Libertyville (10-15) earned a split of two weekend games. On Friday night, the Cats avenged an earlier loss to Lake Forest. Back in January, the Scouts scored 71 points and beat Libertyville. The team's defense stepped up in the 51-44 win. Ryan Barth netted 22 points and Ellis Matthews added 11 points.

Saturday's road loss was at Jacobs. Matthews had 3 three-pointers on the way to 15 points. Also helping out were Griffin Pils (12 points) and Barth (11).
