Four Goal Flurry Fuels Scout Win

Lake Forest girls' hockey team, including Libertyville High School student Bridget Roche, skates past New Trier to advance to semifinals of Blackhawk Cup State Tournament.

Scoring four goals in three minutes of the second period had as much to do with Senior Night for the Lake Forest girls’ hockey team than it did with a 9-1 victory over New Trier Thursday on the Lake Forest College ice.

The win put the Scouts into the semifinals of the Blackhawk Cup State Tournament.

Four different Scouts—Bridget Roche, Willa DeBoom, Frannie Sensenbrenner and Caroline Knop—put the puck in the net in that three-minute stretch of the second period to turn a 2-0 edge into a commanding 6-0 lead.

“We were trying to get everybody goals. It was senior night,” Roche said. She had one of her three goals for the night and both of her assists during the run. “Things have been going really well and we got everybody shots.”

Defense was a key to the Lake Forest victory as well. Each time the Trevians advanced to the Lake Forest side of the red line one of their defenders, led by Knop and Maddie Pfalzer, were there to knock the puck away. Knop and Pfalzer were both named all state this season.

“We’ve been playing pretty solid defense all year,” Coach Elizabeth Zorn said. “We have two all state defenders and we practice it a lot. We do defense well.”

Before the game, the five Scout seniors—Roche, Pfalzer, Sensenbrenner, Lucy Baron and Katherine Hayes—were honored. Roche went on to equal her best performance of the season while the others got in the mix too.

“We’re getting our (game) down pat,” Rochet said. “We’re skating well and getting more accurate shots.”

Besides Roche, ten other Scouts contributed points. Knop had a pair of goals and an assist while Pfalzer, DeBoom, Sensenbrenner, Anna Bleck had a goal and an assist each. Sasha Carney had three assists, Baron and Shannon Miller two each while Nina Wilson and Chandler Scoco had one apiece.

The Scouts move on to the semifinal round of the Blackhawk Cup at 8:25 p.m. March 19 at the Edge in Bensenville against the winner of the upcoming game between Lyons and Loyola Academy. Before that, they were slated to meet a second New Trier team Sunday at the North Shore Ice Arena in Northbrook in the semifinal round of the league playoffs.
