Athlete of the Week: Golfer Alex Quenan

Libertyville senior golfer Alex Quenan is off to a fast and furious start on the links.

Let's be honest. Alex Quenan clearly was a member of the boys golf team the last few years, but he wasn't making headlines every week.

That is until now. To put it mildly, he might be Lake County's hottest golfer.

"It's been fantastic,'' said Libertyville golf coach Sean Matthews. "He's really gone out and started competing."

Most startling was the 69 he posted at Deerfield to kick off the fall golf season.

"That day my irons were better than usual,'' Quenan said. "I had five birdies."

Libertyville High School's athletic department, under the direction of athletics director Briant Kelly, is announcing athletes of the week this season. And naturally, Quenan won the boys golf athlete of the week.

Quenan played basketball both his freshman and sophomore seasons. And then he got serious about golf.

"I went over to the dome in Buffalo Grove and worked on my game,'' Quenan said. "I started playing in summer tournaments."

On Wednesday, the Wildcats fell by a single stroke at Vernon Hills 160-161. Quenan was again the medalist with a sparkling 36.

"I can never complain about a 36,'' he said. "I hit eight greens. I hit two birdies in a row."

Quenan won't knock anyone over with his driving power. But his first shot still goes far enough.

"There are guys who hit the ball further,'' Matthews said. "But he's got all aspects now. His iron play is strong and his putting has been fantastic."

It seems his iron play has taken him to new heights.

"My drives are usually straight,'' Quenan said. "I'm just feeling confident with all my irons. I can get it close to the pin."

In a win over Carmel last week, Quenan blitzed the course with a splendid three-under-par 33.

Now that his game has come together, Quenan is hoping for a shot to play golf at the next level.

"I'm thinking about golf in college,'' he said. "I know so many kids want to play golf in college so I'm going to send emails to coaches."

Right now he's not picky about which college he wants to play at.

"I'm go anywhere,'' he said. "But I do want to get playing time in college."

Also chosen in week one was girls golfer Camilla Ou. She, too, has shown she can play competitive golf. In the first week of the season, she posted a personal best 74 at Bonnie Dundee in Barrington. She also earned medalist honors with a 40. Ou's big week also included a sixth-place finish at the U-High Invitational.

In addition, girls tennis player Halle Roach also received this honor. Her week was highlighted by wins over Carmel, Glenbrook North and Deerfield.
