New Turf Being Installed at Libertyville Sports Complex

The project was approved by Libertyville trustees June 25.

From the looks of it, the crews at the Libertyville Sports Complex were just installing carpet Tuesday afternoon.

This carpet, however, is green with white stripes.

The Libertyville Sports Complex is getting new artificial turf this week on its two indoor multi-purpose fields. The turf replacement project was approved by Libertyville trustees June 25. The contract was awarded to FieldTurf USA, Inc., for just over $167,352.

The previous turf the original turf at the Sports Complex, which opened in June 2002, said Connie Kowal, director of recreation and the Sports Complex. Turf, he said, typically lasts about eight years.

"It had gone well past the intended lifespan of it," said Kowal. "It was still functional, but we knew we needed new turf."

Crews started working on the project Aug. 26, removing the previous turf from the two indoor fields. The new turf is being installed this week. The project will include trimming the turf with an ice resurfacer-style machine that will also lay down rubberized granules, or infill, said Kowal.

Then, the fields will again be ready for use by the many local teams and leagues utilize the fields for soccer, lacrosse, flag football, football and even baseball.

"Our turf can be multi-purpose for any sport," said Kowal. He added that the fields are also used for special events, like Halloween Fest. "We're like the Statue of Liberty. We welcome all to use our fields and flooring."

Want Your Business' Name on a Field?

Next, the Libertyville Sports Complex will seek out local businesses that would like to have their names attached to the two turf-covered fields, now known as the blue field and the green field. Naming rights may also be sold to businesses or families for the eight basketball courts at the complex, Cowal said.

Individuals and businesses interested in having their names attached to these fields and courts should contact Kowal at (847) 362-2720.
