When it’s hot enough to melt outside, refresh yourself with delicious ice cream.

Sunday, July 21 is National Ice Cream Day, and July is National Ice Cream Month, designated by Ronald Reagan in 1984.

If you're the type who likes to know the history of their holidays, here are a few fun facts about ice cream according to International Dairy Foods Association and the National Ice Cream Retailers Association.

  • It takes approximately 50 licks to finish off a scoop of ice cream.
  • It is estimated that 90 percent of the nation's population likes ice cream, making it almost a universal crowd pleasing treat.
  • The major ingredient in ice cream is air.
  • Although ice cream is thought to have been invented in China, the U.S. is the top ice cream consuming country.
