How to Help Those Affected by Joplin Tornado

Patch offers some suggestions on ways to give back to those affected by the devastating tornado in Joplin, Mo.

A tornado ripped through Joplin, Mo., Sunday, damaging hundreds of buildings and killing over 100 people, according to an Associated Press article. 

Search efforts continue in the community and many homes were leveled by the storm that produced up to 198 mph winds, according to the Associated Press.

For those interested in donating to organizations that are helping those affected the tornado, here are some suggestions:

  • The American Red Cross is accepting donations for those affected by the tornado in Joplin. You can donate online, by phone at 1-800-RED-CROSS or by texting "REDCROSS" to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Checks can be sent to  the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013.
  • The Missouri Department of Public Safety has set up a donations' page. Monetary donations will be used to "support disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the floods and tornadoes throughout Missouri; providing shelter, food, emotional support, other supplies and assistance." 
  • The Salvation Army has set up mobile feeding kitchens to help those affected by the tornado in Joplin and by providing "mass feedings for residents and first responders," according to the Salvation Army website. You can donate online, by phone at 1-800-SAL-ARMY or by texting "JOPLIN" to 80888 to make a $10 donation. Checks can be mailed to The Salvation Army, 3637 Broadway, Kansas City, MO with the "Joplin Tornado" in the memo.
