Budding Artist? Check Out Julie J Studio

The new downtown Libertyville art studio offers classes for all ages.

When a couple of moms and their toddlers walked into Julie J Studio, owner Julie Latayan immediately went into artist mode. She set the children up at small easels where they could express their creativity through some finger-painting. They also had a chance to color and play with "Moon Dust." "(I enjoy) seeing the kids so excited about what they make," said Latayan, a Grayslake resident. "They're just beaming." An artist from birth, Latayan said her own talent really took off in eighth grade. "My teacher was a real artist and she really took me under her wing," she said. Latayan went on to spend five years teaching art at Wilmington High School near Joliet. She also displayed her art street fairs and art shows. She even opened her own …

The dance academy is now at 746 E. Park Ave.

Dance Academy of Libertyville has moved to a new location at 746 E. Park Ave. The new facility includes four studios, the biggest being the size of a large stage. “We are excited to be able to comfortably accommodate our growing student population. It was nice to have our business on Milwaukee Avenue, but our expansion options were limited” said Dance Academy co-owner Emily Winkler. Juliet Stephenson, also co-owner of Dance Academy and a fourth-generation Libertyville resident, says she is pleased to keep the business in her hometown. “It was a challenge to find a space large enough to accommodate all our needs within the city limits. Libertyville Art Center Adds New Classes, Space

The David Adler Music and Arts Center is expanding its classroom space as well as art and music offerings as it begins registration for fall classes.

The David Adler Music and Arts Center is expanding this fall, opening new classroom space for its art program and offering new art and music classes to adults, youth, toddlers and parents. Two garden studios located at the back of the Adler property have been connected to running water, so they now can be used as classrooms for art. The center’s Cory Ouellette says the space formerly was two pool houses salvaged from the original Adler pool. The space, however, could not be fully utilized because they did not have access to running water. “With water, we will bring more artists to the center who can share their work with students,” she said. Classes for All Ages Among the new classes this year, Ouellette said the center will offer a …

How Beth McKenna Learned to Paint, Find Inspiration

The long-time Libertyville resident helped launch an art program at Copeland Manor School.

Beth McKenna, who launched the Famous Artists Program at Copeland Manor School, began working with acrylics, then tried oils. Her paintings range from abstracts, to landscapes, to seascapes, to still lifes. She has been taking painting classes in Highland Park and recently began learning the art of woodblock printmaking at a print studio in Evanston. It’s a technique she now knows she’ll continue using. “I go do the woodblocks, then I go paint a traditional landscape, then I’ll paint a completely abstract piece. And so I’ve just got things going all the time,” McKenna explained. “I keep my hands in a lot of different things.” Aside from her own endeavors, she also does commissions for individual art buyers or home designers. “I’ll do a …
