Karl Hagglund's Quigley's Pale Ale won the Besley's Homebrew Competition held at last year's Wine, Beer, Cigar, and Food Festival benefiting the Save Brainerd organization. The Ale will be featured at an event Wed., April 17 from 6-9 p.m. in the Amber Roo
The Besley's Home Brew Contest was created to shine a spotlight on the efforts of the Save Brainerd Project and help spread the word about better beers throughout Lake County. The 2nd annual competition was held during the Northshore Wine, Beer, Cigar and Food Festival last summer. Now the winning beer is being brewed on a larger scale so it can be enjoyed by a wider audience at the Best of the Fest Event to be held on Wed. April 17th at Mickey Finn's in Libertyville. The Brainerd Community Center has created the BrainerdLibertyville YouTube channel to host a series of videos showing the building and discussing why saving the building is a responsible decision.
The first three out of 12 videos are posted on the BrainerdLibertyville YouTube channel exploring the past and future of the building as a community center. Ike Reilly narrates the first video, introducing the concept of the community center. The second video is narrated by Jim Moran and showcases the history of the building. The third installment is narrated by architect Mike Kollman who explains why saving the building and repurposing it is a responsible idea with benefits for the community. Future segments will host leaders and performers from Libertyville's performing arts community, including Wishing Star Theater, the Red Rose Children's Choir, Libertyville Town Productions, and more. Brainerd Community Center Inc. representatives said they decided to delay the referendum to allow more time to educate residents.
Brainerd Community Center Inc. members announced their plan Tuesday night to delay a bond referendum that would help fund various projects, like fixing the roof and doors. The binding referendum is expected to be placed on the March 2014 ballot. The announcement came just as the village board was preparing to vote Jan. 22 on whether to place a binding or non-binding referendum on the April 9, 2013 ballot. A non-binding referendum would solely be advisory in nature. "I think you managed to surprise me this evening," said Mayor Terry Weppler at the village board's Jan. 8 meeting. The Brainerd Community Center Inc. wants to ask voters to approve the sale of $6.5 million in bonds. The financial impact to residents would be about $71 per year …

A non-binding referendum will likely be placed on the April referendum to gauge whether residents would throw their financial support behind the Brainerd Community Center.
Residents will likely be asked in April whether they are willing to support—financially—the Brainerd Community Center project. Trustees are slated to vote at their Jan. 8 meeting on the non-binding referendum question language that village staff has been directed to draft. Should residents support the measure, it would allow the village to, on behalf of Brainerd Community Center Inc., sell $3.5 million in bonds. The money would help fund various projects, like fixing the roof and doors, said Scott Adams, a member of the Brainerd foundation's executive board. The popular Wine, Beer, Cigar and Food Festival is coming Aug. 25 to the historic Brianerd Building. This festival is the major fundraiser for the effort to turn the Brainerd building into a community center which would hold more events and festivals.
The Wine, Beer, Cigar and Food Festival has proven to be a successful fundraiser for the Brainerd Community Center Foundation. The funds raised at past events have been re-invested in the Brainerd building, repairing the roof, windows, heating, and for general maintenance. Now it is the time for the community to invest in the Brainerd Community Center concept and save the building from demolition. The Wine, Beer, Cigar and Food Festival is potentially just the beginning of special events to be held at the historic building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Volunteers sought to help spruce up the Brainerd Building for summer events.
Many hands make light work, therefore the Save Brainerd group is holding a Spring Cleaning day Saturday, May 12. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Brainerd Building, located at 416 W. Park Ave. Help clean out the winter cobwebs as the grounds are prepared for summer events. Brainerd Community Center, Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization looking to save the historic building from demolition and repurpose it into a community center for the arts and education. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. The structure is sound, however, funds are required for the restoration. David Reuter's Lap Dog Robust Porter won Best in Show at the Besley's Homebrew Competition. Now his recipe is brewing at Mickey Finn's Brewery in Libertyville and will be featured at an event supporting the Save Brainerd Foundation on April 25.
It’s a home brewer’s dream come true to have your recipe brewed by a master brewer at a successful microbrewery, and that is what happened to home brewer David Reuter. His Lap Dog Robust Porter was named Best in Show at the first annual Besley’s Homebrew contest held during Brainerd’s Wine, Beer, Cigar and Food Festival last August. The production batch of Reuter’s “Best of the Fest” beer will be available for purchase at Mickey Finn's Brewery and Pub. The Brainerd Community Center, Libertyville Days Festival, and the Photo Flash Mob of Lake County are calling for entries for the second annual Photographic Exhibition to be held from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., June 17 during the 100th Anniversary Libertyville Days Festival in the Jackson Gym of the Brainerd Building. The focus of this year's exhibition is ‘Capture the Spirit.’ Photographers are invited to submit images which strive to capture the essence of joy, humanity, nature, friendship and the times through their eyes and lens. Dear Editor, On behalf of Libertyville's Brainerd Community Center board of directors, I would like to extend a very heartfelt "thank you" to everyone who helped make this past weekend's Wine, Beer, Cigar and Food Festival a resounding success, for a second year in a row! I am excited to announce that over 1,500 people came out to participate in the celebration held at the Brainerd football field. The success can be directly attributed to those who made the decision to show their support for the Brainerd Community Center/Brainerd Building renovation project. Brainerd's North Shore Wine, Beer, Cigar and Food Festival had something for everyone to savor from fine spirits, live music to beautiful weather.
With people lined up at the gate waiting for 3 p.m. to arrive, signs are good that the festival will bring in much-needed revenue for the Brainerd Community Center while providing a delightful day for the festival attendants. It was a win-win situation, thanks to excellent planning, generous volunteers and picture-perfect weather.
