Congratulations to Libertyville and Vernon Hills High School students who excelled in math and music at recent state competitions. Way to represent!
Students from Libertyville High School and Vernon Hills High School scored big at Saturday's Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) State Math Contest Finals at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The LHS team took first place in its division while the VHHS team placed second. In fine arts, the LHS Wind Ensemble and the VHHS Wind Ensemble were each named Honor Band in their divisions at the Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival, also held at the University of Illinois. Rita Fischer, current assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction at Grayslake Community High School District 127, has just been hired to take on the same position in Community High School District 128.

The District 128 Board of Education has named Rita Fischer, Ed.D its new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, effective July 1. Fischer currently holds the same position in Grayslake District 127. "Rita is highly regarded for her instructional leadership work and positive working relationships with teachers, administrators and staff to ensure student growth and increase student achievement," said District 128 Superintendent Prentiss Lea. "She is an outstanding leader, and will be a great addition to the D128 leadership team." Thirteen Community High School District 128 art students received honors in the 14th annual 4x5 Show held at Fremd High School in Palatine. More than 35 schools participate in the show with 1,300 pieces of artwork that are just 4 inches by 5 inches in size. The show will be on display at Fremd High School April 23-May 1, with an awards presentation and reception scheduled for May 1. At Tuesday night's regular meeting, the Community High School District 128 Board of Education reaffirmed the action taken at its special meeting on Jan. 14 to abate $4 million from the district’s 2013 tax levy. At the special meeting, the board voted 5-1 for the tax abatement, which will offset the 3 percent tax levy request the board approved in December. This is the second consecutive year the district has approved a tax abatement. The 2012 abatement was in the amount of $2 million. The decision to seek a second tax abatement came after months of discussion between the board and administration regarding the district’s strategic financial plan. The GLMV Chamber of Commerce's "Dollars for Scholars" organization will hold a concert at Lincolnshire's Viper Alley on Sunday, Feb. 17, to raise scholarship funds for local, college-bound high school students.
Enjoy a dinner theatre-style concert and help raise money for scholarships for Vernon Hills, Libertyville and Mundelein high school students. A fundraiser will be held 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lincolnshire's Viper Alley on Sunday, Feb. 17, to benefit the GLMV Chamber of Commerce's "Dollars for Scholars" non-profit organization, which gives scholarships to students in District 128 and District 120. Village to rebate $1.9 million from special taxing district funds.

The Village of Libertyville will award more than $19 million in rebates from a special taxing district established in 1986 to raise money for downtown improvements, reported the Daily Herald. Among the 10 entities to receive these rebates are Libertyville Elementary District 70 ($716,331), Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128 ($682,477) and the Cook Memorial Public Library District ($72,259).

Fine Arts students from Community High School District 128 gave an impromptu performance of "One More Day" from Les Miserables, to thank the district for its continued support.
Check out this video posted on YouTube of students from Vernon Hills and Libertyville High School's fine arts program surprising the District 128 School Board on Jan. 29 with their version of a "flash mob." The impromptu performance, which was also posted on the D128 Facebook page, was the students' way of thanking the district for supporting the Fine Arts programs. Students who were named IMEA (Illinois Music Educators Association) All-State Musicians thrilled board and audience members with their outstanding rendition of "One Day More" from Les Miserables.
