Evanston Police: Man Duct-Taped Couple, Stole Paintings Stolen paintings found in a Morton Grove consignment shop led Evanston detectives to arrest and charge a Glenview man in connection with a home invasion that took place in Evanston in April 2012.  Michael Karabatsis, 51, of the 600 block of Pfingsten Road in Glenview, was arrested and charged with home invasion, a felony, on Wednesday, Dec. 19.  Police believe Karabatsis was one of three men who knocked on the door of a home in the 2200 block of Central Street on Friday, April 13, claiming they had a delivery. DeKalb NIU Freshman Found Dead in Fraternity House A 2012 Palatine High School graduate attending Northern Illinois University was pronounced dead Friday morning in his fraternity house.  David R. Bogenberger, 19, was found unresponsive, and pronounced dead at 10:45 a.m. Police say there were no suspicious circumstances around the death that point to foul play, and an autopsy is scheduled for today.  Naperville Bond Denied for Mom Accused of Stabbing Children Prosecutors said 40-year-old Elzbieta Plackowska told her 7-year-old son Justin and 5-year-old Olivia Dworakowski to get on their knees and pray before fatally stabbing both children nearly 100 times.  The two young children pleaded for their lives as the woman killed her son first …

Highland Park 5-Year-Old Killed After Woman Drives Onto Sidewalk, Hits Family A five-year-old girl was killed after an 18-year-old woman drove her Lexus Coupe onto a sidewalk and into a family on Labor Day. The driver in the Highland Park crash in the 700 block of Central Avenue which left Jaclyn Santos-Sacramento, 5, of Highland Park, dead was charged Wednesday with driving under the influence “of an intoxicating compound or combination of intoxicating compounds,” according to a news release from Highland Park City Manager David Knapp. Carly Rousso, 18, of Highland Park was charged based on the evidence obtained and analyzed so far with any additional counts based on a further investigation, according to the release. Joliet Drew Peterson Case Likely To End This Week Testimony in the Drew Peterson murder trial concluded Thursday and closing arguements are set for Tuesday, Sept. 4. Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police officer, is charged with murdering his his third wife Kathleen Savio. Savio was found dead in a bathtub in March 2004 and her death initially was ruled an accident. Peterson was charged in Savio's death in May 2009. Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy, disappeared in October 2007 and was never found. Glencoe Cougar On The Loose? Park Ridge Man Charged With Assaulting Teen Who Was Walking Home A Park Ridge resident attacked and ripped the shorts off a 16-year-old girl on Aug. 15 around 5 p.m., Park Ridge police stated. Anthony M. Nugent, 37, of Park Ridge, was charged with one count of aggravated battery, a class 3 felony. Nugent was also charged with misdemeanor possession of cannabis. According to police, the victim was walking in the 900 block of Home Avenue. At that time, Nugent allegedly asked the girl what she was carrying. The victim responded that it was a musical instrument and continued walking, police said. Crystal Lake Knife-wielding Woman Robs Farmstand It appears one woman's attempt to rob Cody's Farm Fresh Stand on Thursday afternoon has been squashed by Crystal Lake Police. Police Cmdr. Dan Dziewior issued a press release Friday stating Amy M. Migliorato, 28, 5 Arrowhead Dr., Algonquin, has been arrested and charged with one count of robbery. Police were called at 4:15 p.m. Thursday to Cody's Farm Fresh Stand at 140 S. Route 14, a vacant lot between The Freeze and the Crystal Lake Motel, where the 20-year-old stand attendant stated an unidentified white woman dressed in an orange jersey displayed a knife and demanded cash. Buffalo Grove Man Charged After Fireworks Cause Large Brush Fire A brush fire northwest of Buffalo Grove and Aptakisic roads destroyed grass and wiped out power to thousands of residents, but no lives or homes were harmed in the blaze. The fire was started by fireworks and quickly consumed about 15 acres of Commonwealth Edison property July 8. Police charged Gabriel R. Horwich, 20, of 424 Cedar Court North, Buffalo Grove, with criminal damage to property by reckless means of a fire — a Class 4 felony. Northbrook Two Crushed In Train Derailment A Glenview couple was crushed to death after a train hauling coal derailed and collapsed a bridge in Northbrook. Video shot by witnesses in the aftermath of the incident is attached to this story. The bodies of Glenview’s Burton Lindner, 69, and his wife Zorine, 70, were found Thursday beneath the wreckage of the 138-car freight train debris.  The couple was crushed when the viaduct they were driving under collapsed following the train derailment near Willow and Shermer Roads July 4. Crystal Lake Police Stop Multi-State Forgery Ring

Police arrested a multi-state theft ring from Florida after trying to cash a forged check. The ring is suspected of operating for seven years.

Crystal Lake and Arlington Heights police arrested four Florida residents Aug. 31 who are suspected of being part of a multi-state theft ring. The Florida residents are accused of attempting to cash a forged check for about $2,000 at a Crystal Lake branch of  J P Morgan Chase Bank, Crystal Lake Deputy Chief Gene Lowery said. “We believe the crew was working across the country in several states including Michigan, Ohio, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee," Lowery said. "They may have been participating in criminal activity of this nature up to seven years."
