Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. According to CyberDriveIllinois.com's 2013 DUI Fact Book, there were 2,593 DUI arrests in Lake County in 2011; 3,071 DUI arrests in 2010; and 3,029 DUI arrests in 2009. DUI facts from …

Police Blotter: Fire Extinguishers Discharged at Moraine Apartments

Fire extinguishers discharged Fire extinguishers were discharged in a number of buildings at the Moraine East Apartments, 866 N. Milwaukee Ave. The manager of the apartments said that the damage occurred the evening of Sept. 14. No damage estimate was available. Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol James F. Kachur, 58, 34 W. Tallgrass Court, Round Lake Beach, was charged Sept. 15 with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood-alcohol content over .08, driving without a valid driver’s license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, causing bodily harm, driving without a valid registration and illegal transportation of alcohol. Police Blotter: Burglary, Brick Thrown on Car

Burglary to Home A resident in the 1100 block of Kristin Drive returned home Sept. 6 to find that his home had been burglarized while he was gone for the weekend. Two exterior doors had been pried open to gain access. A number of closets, drawers and jewelry boxes were ransacked. The homeowner will compile a list of missing items for police. Brick Thrown at Car Between 10 p.m. Sept. 5 and 9 a.m., Sept. 6 a brick was thrown at a resident’s vehicle in the 500 block of West Park Avenue. The brick shattered the windshield. No damage estimate was listed. Burglary to Motor Vehicle A resident in the 600 block of Hillcrest Drive reported Sept. 11 that an unknown person entered an unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway and stole a change purse …

Most Citations Issued for Speeding During Labor Day Campaign

As part of the Labor Day "You Drink. You Drive. You Lose" campaign, Libertyville police ramped up traffic enforcement.

Libertyville police recently announced the results of the department's enhanced traffic enforcement for the Labor Day "You Drink. You Drive. You Lose" campaign from Aug. 19 to Sept. 5. During the campaign a total of 267 citations and 112 warnings were issued. Most arrests and citations were for speeding, followed by no proof of vehicle insurance. Police Blotter: Car Burglary at Condell, Crestfield Ave.

Burglary to Auto An Advocate Condell Medical Center employee reported that her vehicle was broken into from the rear-passenger window on Aug. 30. The employee’s purse, which had been under the front passenger seat, was missing. The purse contained a driver’s license, credit cards, two checkbooks, and $250 that was in a red leather wallet and a red leather change purse. At about midnight Sept. 4, police were sent to the 900 block of Crestfield Avenue on a report of a burglary to motor vehicle in progress. Police discovered a teen and another male had burglarized three vehicles in the area. Police Blotter: Man Hits Comcast Employee, Damage at Libertyville Park

Criminal Damage Libertyville police found damage at Nicholas Dowden Park on Aug. 28. A sink was broken off the wall and a toilet seat was removed from the men’s washroom. No damage estimate was listed. Battery Arrest Ihor Rozdolsky, 39, 625 Riverside Drive, was charged Aug. 28 with battery. Police were called to a report of a battery in progress. Rozdolsky was arrested for battery when he pushed and swung at a Comcast employee who had been sent to the residence to collect the cable equipment due to a delinquent account. Rozdolsky later was released on a $1,500 personal recognizance bond and issued an Oct. 12 court date in Mundelein. DUI Michael H. Aggravated DUI Jeremy D. Dick, 35, 350 S. Slousser, Grayslake, was charged Aug. 17 with aggravated DUI, a felony charge, after police saw Dick crossing over the center line and swerving several times on North Milwaukee Avenue. Due to two prior DUI charges, Dick was charged with a felony charge and his vehicle was seized under state law. He was held for a bond hearing the following morning. DUI Erica A. Libertyville Police Ramps Up Traffic Enforcement

Additional police will be focusing on impaired drivers as part of the Labor Day "You Drink. You Drive. You Lose” campaign.

Libertyville police has amped up traffic enforcement as part of the Labor Day “You Drink. You Drive. You Lose” campaign, which runs from Aug. 19 to Sept. 5. The Illinois Department of Transportation recently awarded $7,900 to Libertyville Police Department for additional enforcement to focus on impaired drivers as well as safety belt violations during that period. Statistics show a disproportionate number of traffic deaths occur late at night and involve a drinking driver and/or unbuckled motorist. “Nighttime is the most critical time for motor vehicle fatalities. Police Blotter: Warrant Arrest, Missing Tools

Warrant Arrest Jason J. Horn, 28, of 33842 N. Lake Shore Drive, Gages Lake, was arrested Aug. 9 after police observed him intoxicated at the Marathon gas station, 704 N. Milwaukee Ave. Horn was found wanted on three warrants, two were in our geographical limitations: a traffic charge warrant from Illinois State Police, and a burglary warrant from Lake County. He was processed and transferred to Lake County jail. Jorge F. Rosales, 32, of 1494 Savannah Ct., Gurnee, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a DUI charge. Forgery Ebony A. Woods, 20, 7222 S. Wentworth, Chicago, was charged Aug. 2 with forgery, a Class 3 felony. Police say Woods has been charged with presenting a fraudulent prescription form to pharmacists at Walgreens, 1470 S. Milwaukee Ave. Woods was processed and held overnight for bond court in Waukegan the next day. DUI Benjamin J. Trimble, 22, 16520 Woodfield Court, Mackinaw, was charged Aug. 5 with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood-alcohol content over .08 and improper lane use.
