Bunny cookies, lamb cakes and "Birds' Nests"—oh my!
Easter may be just a few days away, but there's still time to pick up some goodies for your kids' Easter baskets. The cases and shelves at Lovin Oven Cakery are bursting with everything from Easter-themed sugar cookies, cupcakes and other treats. There are six varieties of Easter sugar cookies, said Jennifer Joel, manager at the Libertyville shop. "We've gone through a couple hundred in the last few days," Joel said, adding that the favorite is the bunny-shaped cookie. There are also "Birds' Nests," which feature chow mien noodles covered in chocolate and shaped to look like a bird's nest. The nests are filled with blue candy eggs. Do you like to buy flowers as an Easter dinner centerpiece?
When it comes to Easter dinner, do you like to have a beautiful, floral centerpiece? According to Jan Buss, owner of Buss Flower Shop in downtown Libertyville, there are certain flowers that scream spring. If you're going to put together a centerpiece, Buss recommends tulips, hydrangeas, French spray roses, orchids and Casablanca lilies. Flower Care And just how should you care for those flowers? "The secret is to buy fresh flowers," said Buss. Flowers like clean, fresh water, she said, and that water should be changed every three days. The water should be filled to the top of the vase, Buss added, because flowers "drink from the full stem." When you're filling your child's Easter basket, which candies do you usually reach for? Perhaps you toss in a handful of jelly beans, or maybe some Peeps. In Pam Lockowitz's opinion, "there's something about solid chocolate bunnies." Lockowitz, manager of Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, said the shop's chocolate bunnies are a favorite every Easter. Rocky Mountain offers solid chocolate bunnies in all sizes, including a 23-pound behemoth that sells for $295. "We had someone buy a 34-pound (chocolate) Santa," said Lockowitz. Aside from the chocolate bunnies, Lockowitz said people stop in to pick up cream-filled eggs to give away as gifts.
