According to Tom & Eddie's, "the average American eats about 29 pounds of fries annually, an impressive statistic that proves their popularity." Tom & Eddie's, which is giving away coupons for free French fries, provided this historical insight in a recent announcement on Vernon Hills Patch: "French fries did not originate in France as the name implies but in Belgium during the 1600′s. The term 'French fries' was coined in World War I by American soldiers who were introduced to them in Belgium. They should be called 'Belgium fries,' right? Chowdown Showdown: French Fry Champion

See which restaurant was selected by readers' votes in the very spirited contest to select the best French fries in northern Lake County.

  After 3,932 votes and more than 43 comments, we are pleased to announce the winner of the spirited Chowdown Showdown competition for best French fries in northern Lake County is Fodrak's in Libertyville! Fodrak's received 2,509 votes, or 63 percent, to take first place. Scooters in Lake Bluff received 1,380 votes, or 35 percent, to take second place in our Reader's Choice poll.
