Students at Tricoci University of Beauty Culture—including the Libertyville campus—recently stepped up to donate money to victims of Hurricane Sandy. Through the TLC (Teaching, Learning, Caring) Program, students raised $7,500 for Hurricane Sandy victims. Beneficiaries of the funds will include employees of Repechage, a manufacturer of professional skin care products, and Marathon Data Systems, a provider of marketing software solutions. Tricoci University CEO Brian Weed said students at the university's nine campuses rallied around the cause. Each campus organized its own way to raise money, and the company offered a corporate match. Grayslake resident and teacher Kerri Harris started a collection drive at her Mundelein school to send clean socks, clothing, toiletries and other supplies to students in New Jersey impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
Kerri Harris, a Grayslake resident who teaches special education at Fremont Intermediate School in Mundelein, grew up in northern New Jersey, spending her summers at the Jersey Shore. "When Hurricane Sandy made its way across the state (in late October) it destroyed so much of what I knew growing up. Luckily my friends and family were all OK, but there were so many who lost everything. There were children the same age as my students who had lost all sense of normalcy," said Harris, 25. As the holiday season approached, Harris wanted to involve her students in a project to bring some comfort to New Jersey students who were impacted by the hurricane. Libertyville-based technology manufacturer MBX Systems is sponsoring a drive for donations to two charities to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy. The company will be collecting supplies requested by the two charities through Dec. 12 in a 53-foot semi-trailer parked at the company’s headquarters at 1200 Technology Way (just south of the Libertyville Township Soccer Complex off Winchester Road). Donations will be distributed by Catholic Charities Community Services, Staten Island, and Gerristen Beach Cares, Brooklyn. Staten Island and Gerristen Beach are two of the neighborhoods that suffered the greatest damage during the storm that devastated the eastern seaboard in October. New Age Transportation plans to send a truckload of goods to New Jersey on Wednesday.
A Lake Zurich company, New Age Transportation, is donating transportation and a facility for organizing a major food and goods drive for victims of hurricane Sandy in New Jersey. Mayor Suzanne Branding and the village are helping to publicize the drive in an effort to fill a truckload of goods by Wednesday. “Last night the Mayor of Hoboken, NJ was on CNN begging for water and food to be sent to the high school where so many people are staying. As a number of East Coast states attempt to get back on their feet after Hurricane Sandy ripped through their towns, the death toll has been identified at 92 people.
As superstorm Hurricane Sandy ripped through a number of East Coast towns across several states, the death toll late Thursday was identified at 92 people, according to CNN. There are shortages of fuel and of food, CNN reports, in addition to 3.3 million customers without power across 15 states and in Washington D.C. Among the many tragic victim stories; one woman's body was washed up on shore in Long Island, NY, and two boys were ripped from their mother's arms as she tried to get to higher ground Thursday, NBC news reports. A wind advisory is in effect for Lake County Oct. 30.
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory Monday night for Lake County that will be in effect from 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 30. According to the National Weather Service, northerly sustained winds of 30 to 35 miles per hour are possible, along with gusts of 45 to 55 miles per hour. The National Weather Service office in Chicago advises that "winds this strong can cause minor property damage unless precautions are taken. Driving may be difficult, especially in high-profile vehicles. Motorists should be alert and use caution." The strongest winds are expected to be by the Lake Michigan shore. The lake could see wave heights of 20 to 25 feet.

As residents on the East Coast prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, the National Weather Service is warning of high waves and winds on Lake Michigan as well. The service has issued a gale watch in effect Monday night through Tuesday. The watch will be in effect for a stretch of the lake that starts in Sheboygan, WI, goes through Illinois and Indiana, and ends up at South Haven, MI. The affected area will be from 5 nautical miles from the shoreline to about the middle of the lake, the weather service said. Winds up to 60 mph are expected along the lakeshore from late Monday through Tuesday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
