When Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) led a mission of 25 people to Israel last week for the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago (JUF), the group expected to get a special look at the country others do not often see. What none of them expected was to observe was a battle in the Syrian civil war but that is exactly what happened when the group visited an Israeli observation point atop Mt. Hermon on the Golan Heights only 25 miles from Damascus. More than 2,500 hear elected officials and community leaders express solidarity with Israel during rally in Chicago.
A noontime crowd of more than 2,500 people in downtown Chicago heard Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) and Rep. Elect Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) express support for Israel’s right to defend itself along with other elected officials and community leaders. What do a Glencoe rabbi with ties to the administration of President Barack Obama, Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) and his Democratic opponent, Brad Schneider of Deerfield, have in common? All three strongly reject a plank in the Democratic Party platform omitting references to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The new statement differs from the party’s position in past campaigns. Schneider, Dold and Rabbi Debra Nesselson of Glencoe all condemned the changed stance of the Democratic Party. Nesselson sat on a White House committee on American-Israeli relations at the invitation of President Obama. Senator walks on his own and talks regularly to staff.
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) released a video today showing himself walking without a cane or harness, working in his Highland Park home and giving an update on his health and progress since his stroke in January. When Kirk was first released from inpatient treatment at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago in May, he stayed with family members. Now he is living and working in his own residence. Lake Forest’s Jillian Schwartz will be competing for the Israeli team in the 2012 London Olympics in track and field. Schwartz, who competed for the United States in the pole vault in 2004, will have her competition begin August 4, with the finals August 6. On August 4, Schwartz will compete in the preliminary round with competition beginning at 10:20 a.m. London time or 4:20 a.m. here. Schwartz will have a preliminary jump and then will attempt to successfully complete the next qualifying height. She will continue at each height, unless she misses three times at a height and then is eliminated. Should Schwartz be one of the top 12 competitors during the qualifying round, she will move into the finals on August 6 at 7 p.m. in London time …

Jillian Schwartz’s return to the Olympic Games Friday as a member of the Israeli team after competing for the United States in 2004 is a highlight of an unlikely journey. The 1997 Lake Forest High School alumna focused on being a professional athlete when she graduated from Duke University in 2001 knowing the Olympics was a part of that career. When she finished fourth in the 2008 U.S. trials barely missing a trip to Beijing, it was time to reflect. For Lake Forest’s Jillian Schwartz, the London Olympics are her second, this time as an Israeli.
The 1997 Lake Forest High School Yearbook named Jillian Schwartz most likely to go to the Olympics. The editors of that publication were accurate prognosticators about this Wall of Fame Scout but few could have forecasted the 15-year journey that took her from the North Shore to her second Olympiad opening Friday in London. She first competed in Athens in 2004. The former two-sport—gymnastics and track—all state Lake Forest athlete chose track at Duke University and became a pole vaulter, a sport barred to women until 2000 so she could not have done that in high school. Midday attack leaves seven Israelis dead.
Seven Israelis were killed Thursday when squads of gunmen brought weapons and explosives into southern Israel from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and attacked buses, cars and army patrol, AP reports. The three-hour attack was one of the boldest on the Jewish state in years, according to AP. Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) said the attack exposed "the tragic reality that our ally Israel is surrounded by hostile neighbors." He went on to say that the U.S. must stand by Israel during "this difficult moment."
