Lake County announces record 2013 highway construction program.

Construction will begin on 32 highway improvements in Lake County this year, totaling an investment of $126 million. This is the Lake County Division of Transportation's (DOT) largest annual highway construction program ever, and is almost three times the size of the biggest previous construction program undertaken by the county. The Lake County Board made a commitment to invest 100 percent of the revenue from the 1/4 percent sales tax for transportation and public safety funds approved in 2008 by the State of Illinois toward improving transportation. Forums will be held in five locations, including Libertyville and Deerfield.
The Lake County Board will soon hold a series of community forums as the board works on its strategic plan. Meetings will be held in locations like Libertyville, Deerfield and Waukegan. District 6 County Board Member Pat Carey spoke about the forums at the Grayslake Village Board's Feb. 5 meeting. Carey said the county board updates its strategic plan every four years. Carey said because it is important to collect information from residents and officials, the county board will hold five forums that will each start with an open house from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by a forum at 7 p.m. Carey said topics will include the economy, transportation, development, sustainability and public safety. Today, the Lake County Board elected Aaron Lawlor as its chairman and Carol Calabresa (District 15, Libertyville) as its vice-chair. Lawlor, 30, was also sworn into his third term representing District 18, which includes all of Vernon Hills and Indian Creek as well as portions of Hawthorn Woods, Long Grove and unincorporated Lake County. As he took over the gavel, Lawlor stated, "there is a lot of change among this board today, but our priorities remain the same. Lake County Board candidates participated in the League of Women Voters Debate this past Sunday. Lake County promotes sustainable environment with online videos.
Lake County’s Sustainable Video Library offers tips on conservation of energy, recycling, and water conservation. County residents can learn about the energy saved by replacing incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent. The Sustainable Lake County website also has videos on how to conserve your computer’s energy, the importance of recycling cans, and how to avoid wasting water. Back in 2007, the county board passed a strategic plan with a goal to make Lake County a leader in sustainability. An explanation of the Strategy for a Sustainable Lake County is also available in the video library. Other videos show what Lake County is doing to go green. After observing all of the street repair projects pending for the Antioch area, there is one very noticeably absent problem street: Grimm Road. This road is so full of potholes and black patches in poor condition, it is hardly worth driving on. PLEASE add resurfacing Grimm Road to the list of necessary repair projects!   more ›
