The Lake County Forest Preserves will hold a native plant sale May 11-12, while SWALCO will sell compost bins and rain barrels May 11.
As you gear up for spring, you may want to stop by Independence Grove this weekend to pick up some essentials. The Lake County Forest Preserves will hold its 16th Annual Native Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 11 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 12. The event, which will serve as a fundraiser for the Forest Preserves' environmental education programs, will feature a variety of items, including: ferns, flowers, grasses, shrubs, trees and vines. During stream monitoring this past summer, Nick Huber and other ecologists of the Lake County Forest Preserves discovered several dozen Mississippi grass shrimp, Palaimonetes kadikensis, in a forest preserve along the Des Plaines River in southern Lake County. Due to the fact that you can see right through them, this species is also commonly referred to as glass shrimp. At first sight, the ecologists did not recognize the inch-long crustaceans. It was clear that this find was something rare and exciting. After further collection parameters were determined, Huber and his team confirmed it was safe to remove two specimens for identification in their laboratory. Have you seen any bald eagles flying around Lake County lately? If you have, you're not alone. The Lake County Forest Preserves shared a photo on their Facebook page Tuesday of a bald eagle that was spotted in a tree at Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville. Commenters on that photo reported seeing bald eagles in other places, too, including at Route 173 and Kilbourne, and near Gregg's Landing in Vernon Hills. Even more sightings were reported when the photo was shared on the Grayslake Patch Facebook page. One reader said she saw a bald eagle in Lake Zurich on Jan. 27. Don’t send your Christmas tree to the landfill, drop it off at a Lake County Forest Preserve site for recycling. Donated trees are chipped and used for trails and for landscaping at forest preserves throughout Lake County. Bring your tree to a drop-off site at one of the following forest preserves, open daily from 6:30 a.m. to sunset: Only undecorated, real Christmas trees can be accepted; no yard waste. Commercial drop-offs are prohibited.

With small solar lights to guide their way, hikers, skiers and snowshoers can get some brisk evening exercise along the 1.3-mile fitness trail at Old School Forest Preserve in Libertyville, and along a 1.65-mile hilly, scenic section of the Millennium Trail adjacent to the Winter Sports Area at Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda. Though regular preserve hours are 6:30 a.m. to sunset, starting Sunday, Nov. 4, the illuminated trails and adjacent parking lots will remain open after sunset until 9 p.m., daily through Saturday, March 9, 2013. It has been 42 years since the first Earth Day laid the foundation for a global environmental movement. Here in Lake County, Earth Day has turned into Earth Week with loads of nature activities and educational opportunities. The Lake County Forest Preserve has consolidated its eight offices that were scattered around Lake County and moved staff to a central location in Libertyville. The new general offices at 1899 W. Winchester Rd. opened Monday and houses nearly 100 Forest Preserve staff responsible for administration, planning, natural resources, land acquisition, public information, education and registration, as well as a public meeting room. The Lake County Discovery Museum will also move to this location in the near future. Work groups will be moved to the new location over the next two weeks.
