What can the village do? If it is their fault that you flooded, then they should help. Otherwise, I'm not sure why they should pay for Waste Management to pick up your garbage. This begs the question - Do you have flood insurance? Sadly, most people do not realize that they have no coverage if they flood. Most of Grayslake is not in a flood plain, so you can get federal flood insurance through …   more ›

Health Dept. Offers Water Tests for Flood Victims

Did your home experience flooding this week? The Lake County Health Department is offering free water testing to residents with wells.

The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is urging Lake County residents to take precautions to minimize health hazards during and after the floods. The health department is urging people who are not part of the cleanup effort to stay clear of the flood waters to avoid contamination, especially in areas where homes are served by individual septic systems.  Septic systems are a cause for concern because they can release sewage into the floodwater when they are submerged.   The health department is offering free water testing to residents whose wells are affected by flood waters. Residents can pick up sterile bottles to be filled and returned for analysis, and obtain information about disinfecting wells at the Lake County …

Lake County Ranks 16th in the State for Healthy Residents

Though Lake County ranks in the top 20 of 102 counties throughout Illinois, it's a measurable drop from 2012.

Despite improvements in areas including sexually transmitted infections and violent crime, Lake County is not as healthy as it was just a year ago, according to the 2013 County Health Rankings, which were released this week. Of 102 counties in Illinois, Lake County ranks 16—a seven-spot drop over 2012's rank of 9. In 2011, the county's health ranking was 8. While there is room for improvement given the consecutive drops in rank, the Lake County Health Department is not discouraged. "While our county ranking dipped from 9th to 16th, we are still a very healthy county compared with Illinois as a whole," said Mark Pfister, Director of Population Health Services at the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center. "As a result of …

Lake County also monitors flu tests from area hospitals, which reported 20 positive tests during the week of Dec. 2-8, Knight said. The following week, the number went up to 38, he said.
