I'm taking a look back at some of my favorite moments of 2012 in Libertyville and Vernon Hills.
I'm taking a look back at 2012 and remembering the great times I've had while working for Patch. I've been with Patch for more than a year and a half now. I spent the first year as the editor of Lake Zurich Patch. Then, the editor spot opened up for Libertyville Patch and I jumped at the opportunity. I've always loved Libertyville. I grew up in Lake County and always loved Libertyville's beautiful downtown. At the same time, I was presented with the opportunity to launch Vernon Hills Patch. The site launched on May 31, 2012, and has been growing ever since. I've spent so much time in Vernon Hills over the years; Westfield Hawthorn Mall is, after all, our local shopping mecca when it comes to malls. These past several months in Libertyville…

Libertyville spirit was abundant as residents turned out for the 2012 festival, "Celebrating the Spirit"
It was easy to see at this year's festival that Libertyville is a community rich in spirit and talent. The four-day festival was jam-packed with sunshine and entertainment for all ages. Talented residents The Arts and Crafts fair was full of artisans showing their creativity. Local musicians joined area bands on stages in the food court and in Cook Park. Talent competitions, live theater performances and a cookie bake-off gave residents a forum to showcase their skills. Poised girls competed for the opportunity to represent the village as local royalty. Local photographers had an opportunity to display their work in a public exhibition. There is no doubt — Libertyville's got talent both on and off the festival stage. Family Entertainment …

Where there's smoke, there's ... ribs.
As Libertyville Days planner Dee Cox says, prepare to see some "smokin' firemen." This year's Libertyville Days festival will feature a rib cook-off that will pit firefighters from four local firehouses against each other. The Libertyville Fire Department's Andy Yarc will take on firefighters from the Countryside, Lake Bluff and Lake Forest fire departments. The rib cook-off is slated for 1 p.m. June 16 in the beer garden. Dee Cox, who is in her ninth year planning the Libertyville Days festival, said Mickey Finn's is underwriting the event and supplying the ribs. The ribs will be judged on a variety of criteria, including smokiness and taste. Cox said the panel of "celebrity" judges will include Libertyville Mayor Terry Weppler and Mickey…

Readers, which events should I check out this weekend?
I have to admit something to you, dear readers. I've never really been to Libertyville Days. OK, I went once with my brother several years ago and we just went on a couple of rides, and I walked in the parade a couple of times. But other than that, I've never really experienced Libertyville Days. So I want you to tell me — which events/activities should I check out this weekend? Here are a few I'm curious about: What else should I check out at Libertyville Days? Tell me in the comments section. By the way — look for me at the parade Saturday. I'll be handing out bottles of Patch bubbles to kids!
