Kintzel, Kaczmar Back for Their Fourth Season

Libertyville softball has some familiar names.

That right side of the diamond looks very familiar. No. 11 in a Libertyville uniform brings a big bat with her during softball season. She's first baseman Toni Kintzel. To her right is second baseman, Danielle Kaczmar. Yes, it's been four springs since these two girls made the Libertyville varsity. On Wednesday, these two veterans were joined in the Wildcats infield by two fellow seniors, Liz Wilcox (shortstop) and Nicole Kruckman (third base). Despite at least one hit in every inning but the fifth, the Wildcats (1-5) fell for the second consecutive day to Stevenson. And by the same identical score of 5-2. Losing pitcher Andie Grant deserved better as Libertyville's defense let a few runs in. "I thought Andie threw a great game,'' said …

Patch Awards for Libertyville Sports

Time to celebrate Libertyville's winter sports achievements.

By all accounts it was a splendid winter for the Libertyville High School sports teams. But it's time to pick one MVP from each of these teams. Of course that's not an easy task but someone has to do it. Girls Basketball: No doubt these girls are disappointed they didn't go further. But well down the road they can tell their children that they beat the state's second-best team, Zion-Benton, three times this season. This team's MVP is naturally Savannah Trees. The team's top scorer had another terrific campaign for this team that won a school record 29 games. Boys Basketball: Obviously this team hoped for a better season. But for a club that won just 12 games, winning a regional opener on the last night of February had to feel good. No …

Girls basketball team still unbeaten. Swimmers and wrestlers head to the finish line.

There are only 30-match winners heading to state. And that makes sense as the best wrestlers make it to Assembly Hall in Champaign. So without further ado, here are those Libertyville High School wrestlers heading to state next weekend. The most successful Wildcat on Saturday was 36-match winner Luke Gaeth (130). He placed second at the Barrington Sectional and will lead the Wildcats to state. He'll have some company. Kevin Tavakoli, wrestling at 145, took fourth place, and this senior will take a 35-13 record to state. At 215, another senior, Luke Miller, placed second. His mark is 32-10. Now marked down as an alternate is Charlie Meyer at 125. He stands at 31-15 on the season. Boys Swimming: This football player does quite well diving …

Wrestling team wins another conference title; girls basketball team's map set for the big run.

The one program that seems to dominate year in and year out is the one with the kids you don't want to mess with. Some of them may be on the small side but again it's not wise to make them angry. Congratulations are out for the Libertyville boys wrestling team. Another conference title was clinched on Saturday. That follows a 6-0 mark in the regular season. Now it wasn't easy for the Wildcats up at Lakes High School, both Warren and Stevenson have potent squads. But aided by a pair of champions, the Wildcats prevailed with 186 points. Those two champions also did not have free rides on the way to titles. At 112, Pat Fitzgerald headed to overtime before nipping Grant's Ben Soumar. The versatile Sayad Banifazl settled in at 152 and edged …

Unbeaten Wildcats win a conference title; hockey and wrestling teams making progress.

From the no surprise column comes the Libertyville girls basketball team. The Wildcats clinched the North Suburban Conference's Lake Division on Saturday. Even without star defensive ace Kaca Savatic (knee), the Wildcats (22-0) beat Warren 38-26 on Saturday. So far the team has had two wins each over Stevenson, Warren and Lake Zurich. They beat Zion-Benton three times, once during the Mundelein Holiday Tournament and twice during conference play. That's very impressive. "We are doing a good job of executing on defense and sticking to the game plan,'' said Libertyville girls coach Kathie Swanson. "That has been a staple of this team's success all year long, so I'm glad to see that continue." Of course it helps to have experienced players in…

Unbeaten Wildcats Win 18th Game in a Row

Libertyville High School's girls basketball team goes scoreless in second quarter but still stops Stevenson.

How can a team that goes scoreless in one entire quarter, still win a key game by 13 points? It's that one constant: defense. Libertyville (18-0) missed 10 straight shots in the second quarter at Stevenson on Thursday night. Still, the Wildcats only trailed 13-10 at halftime. Aided by 18 of 18 shooting from the free throw line, Libertyville took a giant step towards another NSC Lake Division crown with a 43-30 win over rival Stevenson. "I'm really proud of my kids,'' said Libertyville coach Kathie Swanson. "We knew Stevenson would want revenge from our first game. They are an extremely well coached team." On a pair of Olivia Wilcox free throws, the Wildcats surged to a quick 10-2 lead in the Stevenson gym. No one guess it at the time but …

Amazing Defense Helps Wildcats; Wrestling Right on Target

LHS Girls Basketball team beat Belvidere 67-7 last week.

Is it girls basketball in general or just Libertyville? But scores like that haven't been seen in these parts in some time.  67-7? That was the score the unbeaten Libertyville girls basketball team defeated Belvidere with last week. Mind you, this is varsity basketball. And it wasn't like the Wildcats (13-0) were trying to run up the score. "Yes, we beat them by 60,'' said Libertyville girls basketball coach Kathie Swanson.  "I know that sounds pretty bad. We played our starters for about 1 1/2 quarters and allowed our bench to play most of the game. We played straight up man to man defense and motion offense, so it's not like we were trying to run up the score." Ok, let's put that down in the column of Belvidere's girls basketball team is…
