For the second year in a row, Illinois Basketball Coaches Association awarded the title to Libertyville High School’s Girls Basketball coach.
Like many players, Libertyville High School's Kaca Savatic was a little uneasy about her promotion to the varsity as a sophomore. She admitted she was uncomfortable meeting head coach Kathie Swanson. "I was intimidated,'' Savatic recalled. "I was so nervous. She had such high expectations. But once I got to know her she had reasons for doing everything." Savatic has completed her days playing varsity basketball at Libertyville. And she'll have plenty of memories of team that won 48 out of its last 51 games. After a marvelous 29-1 season, the IBCA (Illinois Basketball Coaches Association) announced for the second year in a row that Libertyville coach Swanson is again the District 6 3A/4A co-coach of the year. "It's very nice for the IBCA …

Libertyville High School's girls basketball team has had two great seasons.
The skeptics will always wonder: How did Libertyville's girls basketball team win back to back NSC Lake Division championships? What about those winning streaks of 15 games last season and that record-breaking 29 game streak this season? All told it was a 54-7 mark in two seasons. After a 6-4 start to the 2009-10 season, the Wildcats stormed to a 48-3 mark. How? Why? Much has been made of this team that did not produce one Division I basketball player. Some of the highlights included four consecutive wins over rival Stevenson. Patriots club has two players headed off to play Division I basketball. That conference mark was 20-2 in two seasons in a division that includes talented clubs like Warren, Lake Zurich and Mundelein. Some of …

Libertyville's Magical Season Closes It's safe to say we won't see another team like this for some time to come. The Libertyville girls basketball team that refused to lose this year finally tasted defeat on Monday night at the Mundelein Sectional. The girls had a fabulous season and broke the schools record for most wins in a row. Proposed Dymond Road Project to Add 22 Parking Spaces At a recent Dymond Road Project open house, some residents said additional parking spaces would not be needed in the area. However, the village still plans to add 22 parking spots around Dymond road. First loss of the season comes to Zion-Benton at the Mundelein Sectional.
It's safe to say we won't see another team like this for some time to come. The Libertyville girls basketball team that refused to lose this year finally tasted defeat on Monday night at the Mundelein Sectional. Zion-Benton, a club that the Wildcats had beaten three times this season, avenged those defeats in front of a big crowd. Zion-Benton stopped the Wildcats 43-35. "It wasn't our night,'' admitted Libertyville coach Kathie Swanson. "We played out of character. We lost our composure and that hasn't been our hallmark." In a game that the Zee-Bees took a 35-25 lead to the fourth quarter, the Wildcats refused to quit. On a pair of free throws from Savannah Trees (15 points), the Cats pulled within 37-33 with less than two minutes to play…

Wrestler Miller and gymnast Herchenbach place in state; unbeaten girls basketball team heads to the sectional.
As the winter season closes, it's time to salute a few successful athletes from Libertyville High School, and prepare to see how far the unbeaten girls hoops team can go from here. Luke Miller's senior season of wrestling netted 36 victories. Maybe more importantly, there is that fifth-place medal for him and his team to feel good about. Wrestling completed this weekend in Champaign and Miller (215) was the school's top finisher. In bout 414 of state wrestling, Miller secured fifth place in the state while stopping Shaquille McMurtry of Lockport 8-3. In match 273, Miller beat Greg Cameron of Plainfield 3-1. Miller did not run into unbeaten state champion Josh Marchok (Schaumburg) but did lose a tough 3-1 decision to Brian Allen of …

Unbeaten Libertyville girls take care of business at the Deerfield Regional.
The 28-0 Libertyville Wildcats girls basketball team now has another school record to put on the wall. It's called the longest winning streak in the distinguished program's history. After 27 wins in a row, the Wildcats were not likely to trip up in a regional opener Tuesday night against Deerfield (16th seed). Libertyville kicked its offensive game into high gear and handled the home-standing Warriors 61-40. "I thought we came out with the right mindset offensively,'' said Libertyville coach Kathie Swanson. "We looked to push the ball up the court and work it around for a good shot. " Alex Haley led a balanced Wildcats attack with 16 points. Savannah Trees (12 points) and Olivia Wilcox (10 points) all helped out. Even when Deerfield …

Girls basketball team still unbeaten. Swimmers and wrestlers head to the finish line.
There are only 30-match winners heading to state. And that makes sense as the best wrestlers make it to Assembly Hall in Champaign. So without further ado, here are those Libertyville High School wrestlers heading to state next weekend. The most successful Wildcat on Saturday was 36-match winner Luke Gaeth (130). He placed second at the Barrington Sectional and will lead the Wildcats to state. He'll have some company. Kevin Tavakoli, wrestling at 145, took fourth place, and this senior will take a 35-13 record to state. At 215, another senior, Luke Miller, placed second. His mark is 32-10. Now marked down as an alternate is Charlie Meyer at 125. He stands at 31-15 on the season. Boys Swimming: This football player does quite well diving …

Little-used Jackie Hansen comes off the bench to provide spark in win over Wauconda.
Anyone figuring the odds at the NSC title game on Wednesday night was simply out of luck. The battle between unbeaten Libertyville and Wauconda didn't figure to be close. Yet with less than six minutes to play in the fourth quarter it was knotted up at 27-27. Maybe even higher odds would placed on No. 33 in a Libertyville uniform having anything to do with this big contest. Jackie Hansen gave the Wildcats (27-0) great energy off the bench. Libertyville star Savannah Trees scored the game's last 10 points as the Wildcats won the title game 37-27. The junior Hansen was one of the first players off coach Kathie Swanson's bench. That came in the first quarter as the lethargic Wildcats offense produced only 5 points and trailed the underdog …
