Roundy's CEO Bob Mariano Speaks at Business Event

Mariano and American Chartered Bank President Dan Miller spoke of the importance of employees in growing a business.

When it comes to the supermarkets that make up the Roundy's family, including Mariano's, the strength of the company lies in its people, says Bob Mariano, chairman and chief executive officer of Roundy's. "We have to teach and have a shared vision … so they do things because they want to, not because they're told what to do," Mariano told a sizable group of people who attended a recent GLMV (Green Oaks, Libertyville, Mundelein, Vernon Hills) Chamber of Commerce business mixer. From going the extra mile for a customer to greeting people in a genuine way, "they have to want to do it," Mariano added. He shared the story of a young man who works at Mariano's in Palatine. While gathering carts, the young man greets customers as they get out of …

Mariano's does NOT value its employees. They test them with contempt, disrespect and intimidation. Bob Mariano isa LIAR. That story is false. He is no better than Walmart, all employees are part time, are told to do so much work they cannot complete then are disciplined because work not done, benefits are ONLY provided by union, and union is corrupt and bought and paid for by Bob Mariano to do …   more ›

Mariano's Could Soon Have Larger Parking Lot

The new 134-space lot at the Vernon Hills store would be completed by the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays.

Attention, Mariano's Fresh Market shoppers. Your store could soon have a larger parking lot. The Vernon Hills Village Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to direct staff to draft an ordinance to allow the expanded parking lot on the Mariano's site. The new 134-space lot would be constructed just east of the existing lot on 1.89 acres of land. John Kalmar, assistant village manager and director of community development, provided an update to the village board. He said the planning and zoning commission voted 4-0 to recommend approval of the parking lot. According to a written summary provided to the village board, representatives from Roundy's and Bradford Real Estate Services Corp. explained to the commission at its Aug. 8 meeting that "…

Good to learn this -- close-in parking was inadequate at the outset for a store that size. Their Roundy's products are competitively priced and the store offers so much variety that it is worth the inconvenience of circling to find a parking spot. My only coplaint is the crowding. The rudeness of the shoppers is a bit shocking, but that is not Mariano's fault. Both do make it less enjoyable to be…   more ›

Village Staff Remains Confident in Libertyville Shoppers

Libertyville's Jewel-Osco becomes more competitive after Mariano's Fresh Market opened in Vernon Hills.

Economic Development Commission members remain concerned about possible sales tax damage the new Mariano’s fresh market may have on Libertyville’s sales tax revenue, but they say they are confident that Libertyville residents will continue shopping in their hometown. Although the Jewel-Osco store has not released any sales numbers to the village, members of the EDC said they have noticed that the Jewel is becoming more competitive and recently placed a customer-appreciation ad. Heather Rowe, economic development coordinator for the village, said that she has been in the store twice recently and that it seemed busy. “Competition does make you step up your game,” Commissioner Tom Kreuser said in reference to Jewel’s attempts to retain …

Kathleen, I think your comment regarding the vacancies downtown interesting; do you support these businesses by either patronizing them, spreading the word that they are there, coming to their functions? Of course Libertyville's businesses cannot survive on the town residents alone, that's not the point of the Shop Local movement. The point is to be mindful of independent businesses and support …   more ›

Mayor Weppler Thanks Libertyville Customers

Libertyville mayor encourages residents to Shop Libertyville.

As a sign of appreciation for patronizing Libertyville businesses, Mayor Terry Weppler bagged groceries, shook hands, and thanked customers at Sunset Foods on Monday. “I just wanted to thank people for shopping here in Libertyville,” Weppler said. “When people shop here, 68 cents of every dollar stays in the community.” A week earlier, Weppler greeted and thanked customers at Libertyville’s Jewel-Osco store on Milwaukee Avenue. Grocery store owners and village officials have been concerned about the addition of Mariano’s Fresh Market in Vernon Hills, which opened in June on Milwaukee Avenue, as a shopping option to Libertyville residents. According to Community Development Director John Spoden, Jewel-Osco is one of the village’s top 20 tax…

My family and our next door neighbor boycott Libertyville business because of their utility tax. With the opening of Mariano's we are now able to shop 100% outside of Libertyville. We had to go to Jewel before... When I purchase my new car in two years I will purposely buy it outside of Libertyville. I can't vote on issues that our trustees can like new taxes but I can sure vote with my dollars.   more ›

Mariano's Fresh Market Opens June 14

The grocery store is scheduled to open in Vernon Hills.

A new grocery store is set to open near Libertyville’s Jewel-Osco on at 6 a.m. on June 14. Mariano’s Fresh Market, 1720 N. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills, will offer items from “grilled-to-order meat and fresh seafood to a 1,200-item wine wall,” according to DailyHerald.com. Village officials have been concerned that the new grocery store in Vernon Hills may take a chunk of the tax base from Libertyville. Since April, members of the Economic Development Commission have been discussing a media blitz to educate residents on the benefits of shopping locally and the need to keep tax dollars in Libertyville. Mayor Terry Weppler says he plans to visit Sunset Foods, 1451 Peterson Road, and Jewel-Osco, 1300 S. Milwaukee Ave., "to thank residents for…

I went to Mariano's on opening day and was always astounded at the pricing Jewel has long got away with. I have shopped for groceries in Wisconsin at an upscale market and still would pay less than Jewel. Hey, Jewel--Is your milk still $3.99 a gal?   more ›

Vernon Hills Store Threatens Libertyville's Tax Base

Economic Development Commission members discuss ways to keep grocery business in Libertyville.

Members of the Economic Development Commission (EDC) discussed a media blitz to help a local grocery store at a recent meeting. Mariano's Fresh Market is scheduled to open in Vernon Hills in late June and its proximity to Jewel-Osco, at 1300 S. Milwaukee Ave., could hurt the village's tax base. John Spoden, director of Community Development, said not only is that Jewel one of the village’s top 20 tax-producing entities, he believes it is also one of the best performing Jewel–Osco stores in the Chicago area.  Steve Martin, an EDC member, says the Jewel-Osco store in Libertyville may lose up to 50 percent of business to the new grocery store. Business at the Jewel grocery store in downtown Arlington Heights was hurt badly when Mariano's …

Kudos Dani. Many great employees there at Jewel. They are not the problem, however; some people just can't be catered to enough [Fred]. Those complaining about employees chit-chatting should try engaging the employees in conversation while they wait for their groceries. "It doesn't cost a dime to be nice" ~Norm Van Leer   more ›
