Each day, the staff and volunteers at Maristella in Libertyville receive about 15 calls from people who need help paying their rent or finding housing. "Our goal is to prevent the homelessness," said Fran Forys, one of the founders of the non-profit organization. These days, though, meeting that goal has become tougher with a tighter cash flow. Forys said grant money from the state is running three months behind. "I pray every day, 'Lord, please bring us some big bucks,'" said Forys. "The government money is very scarce. But we have survived. We're trying to keep up good spirits." Next month, the community will have a chance to help Maristella bring in some money to help meet the needs of its clients. The festival, which took place in mid-June, raised funds for Libertyville Civic Center Foundation and three other civic groups.
Did you know that Libertyville Days Festival help raises funds for more than just Libertyville Civic Center Foundation? In 2011, the festival raised $28,000 for Libertyville Civic Center Foundation, but it also raised $5,000 for each of the three civic groups that helped run the festival. Each civic group put in about 400 hours of volunteering to plan, organize and run the four-day festival, according to Anne Carlino, director of Libertyville Civic Center Foundation. Maristella continues its mission one case at a time.
After Diane Luquis packed up her two children and left their physically abusive father, she and her family lived out of her car for more than three months. They needed a helping hand, said the mother of two, who left her home in Chicago's Humboldt Park. "I didn't sleep, so I could watch them sleep," Luquis said. "After getting into a studio apartment through a downtown shelter, we were robbed in less than two months. I saw the look on my daughters' faces, and I knew I had to do something." So she drove herself and her children to Gurnee and got in touch with the Libertyville non-profit Maristella, whose mission is to assist Lake County women, with or without children, who are homeless.
