I decided to finally satisfy my Black Friday curiosity this year.
I've always been curious about the Black Friday hype, but I've never actually been curious enough to go check it out. I like my sleep, thank you very much. But this year, I decided I'd venture out to Westfield Hawthorn Mall for the midnight opening, largely for journalistic purposes (to get photos of the huge crowds)—but also to satisfy that curiosity. That's not where my Black Friday experience began, though, as I decided to tag along with my brother and his partner to two big box stores in Gurnee. I'll just say it's something I'd rather not experience again. The stores were both very organized, with queue lines to keep the crowds in check. But if you value your personal space like I do, you'd probably happily do without being elbowed by …

Apps to help you navigate and find the great deals on Black Friday.
Black Friday sales require a good strategy, comfortable shoes and a lot of coffee. There’s one more thing to add to the list: your iPhone or Smartphone. A variety of apps can turn your phone into a shopping tool that will help you navigate stores, get coupons and find the best prices. Wired reports that more apps are being rolled out as retailers “acknowledge the new reality of anytime, anywhere retail, a reality in which getting someone to tap an app on Black Friday is at least as important as getting them through the door.” A few recommendations from PCWorld.com include: Google Maps Google Maps provides maps for stores like Macy’s and Nordstrom. This app can also be used to help you plan out your route and find items on store shelves. …

Target opens at 9 p.m. Many others open at midnight or very early Friday morning. Several stores are offering waves of doorbusters. Many also are advertising online deals, which include free shipping, and Black Friday prices all day Thanksgiving. The early start to Black Friday has even prompted some opponents to start petitions against the practice. Here's everything you need to know about Black Friday. Planning to travel or shop this weekend? Here are some tips for you.
The holidays are here! The busiest time of year is again upon us. Don’t let the hectic pace of the season keep you from using good judgment and common sense. Not doing so can expose you, your vehicle and maybe even your home to the whims of a thief. The old expression about not reinventing the wheel has a lot of validity, and you have probably heard some of these things before. Nevertheless, the topic is far too important not to repeat. Protecting yourself, your family and your belongings doesn’t have to be difficult, inconvenient or expensive. Sometimes all that is needed is a reminder. The Vernon Hills Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit has the following simple suggestions to help improve your security, both at home and away, …

More retailers are choosing to open their doors on Thanksgiving night to eager bargain hunters. Meanwhile, an employee of Target is taking a stand, and has gotten more than 338,000 signatures from others who agree Thanksgiving needs to be saved.
Has Black Friday been stretched too far, or near, now that deals are actually being offered starting Thanksgiving night? The answer to that question is yes, says one Target employee out of Corona, CA. “C Renee” has obtained 338,418 signatures on Change.org from people who agree Target needs to take the high road and "save Thanksgiving." "Since workers need to show up sometimes hours before the story officially opens, this will take much of Thanksgiving away from retail employees across the country," C Renee said in her petition on Change.org. "Target can take the high road and save Thanksgiving for employees like me and our families by saying no to 'Thanksgiving Creep,'" C Renee added. Target’s Black Friday deals start at 9 on …

I have no desire to shop on Thanksgiving or Black Friday. I wish retailers would remain closed on Thanksgiving so that employees could spend the day with their families or friends.   more ›

Trash or Treasure? “The secret of a happy life isn’t buried in a treasure chest…it lies within your heart. (Or…in your closet!)” Ok, I will admit to being a Baby Boomer so I consider myself a little “seasoned” as a woman, a consumer and an all around “educated by time” kinda girl. If you are a Boomer Girl like me, then it’s time not to come out of the closet, but to go back in! As I said in previous columns, I get a little attached to my “stuff.” Stuff is defined as jewelry, objet d’art (whether they came from Italy or my neighbor’s garage), and clothing. Now, I get especially attached to clothing particularly when it was something that I thought I looked good in–in 1969? 1979? 1989? 1999? (Note that what I am suggesting is not …

Stuart I was actually thinking of shopping for yourself--but this is a great idea! (I did do a variation on your theme--when I lost weight I "shopped" for my cohorts who could use the beautiful larger items which gave me room in the closet and motivates me to stay on a healthy eating track! Thank you!   more ›

The “Aisle-File” Shopping List How many hours did I waste killing time, literally beating it to death, by wandering the aisles of my supermarket(s) hunting my supermarket prey (groceries for those not familiar with my analogies)? The answer to that is an embarrassing TOO MANY!!! As a young married college student and later as a young teacher, I never gave much thought to supermarket time management. Like a lot of consumers I would attend school and/or work all week and reserve precious Saturdays for supermarket shopping. Like a modern pioneer I would set out with my shopping list and errands, leaving the house in the morning and returning with my brown paper bags of booty hours later feeling satisfied and with a sense of accomplishment …

About a zillion years ago I switched from a traditional coupon holder and separate list to a list on an envelope too! This helps me keep all f the coupons I am using together in one place; I never forget because the list is right there on the envelope. I do go a step farther though--if I am shopping at more than one store--I have an envelope with a list for each--this saves a TON OF TIME! -jan ;)   more ›
