FEMA declared Lake County a disaster area during the recent snowstorm.
Libertyville, like other Lake County towns, will be eligible for federal disaster aid to cover the cost of the Blizzard of 2011, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said Thursday. Funding is “available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the snowstorm,” according to a FEMA release. Lake, McHenry, Kane, DeKalb and Cook counties are all eligible, FEMA stated. The historic snowstorm hit Jan.31 and paralyzed the entire region with 17 to 20 inches of snow in some areas. The village is working with Lake County to apply for federal reimbursement.
Libertyville spent $168,242 on last week’s blizzard, which bought 20 inches of snow to the area, according to the village. Downtown snow clean-up efforts cost the village $75,000. Another $32,500 was spent for overtime and $11,400 was for equipment repairs. The village allocated about $49,000 for the use of village equipment. The blizzard cost the police and fire department about $6,300. The village is working with the Lake County Emergency Management Agency to apply for federal funding reimbursement. If Lake County is declared a Federal Disaster Area, the village will be eligible for some or all reimbursements. Related Articles

Don’t head to the forest preserves for snow day sledding, as all sites closed tomorrow.
The Lake County Forest Preserve District offices and sites will be closed tomorrow for, probably, the first time ever due to snow. “It’s a matter of safety. We’re supposed to be close to zero visibility and we want our staff to be safe, and we don’t want to encourage people to put their selves in danger to go out to the forest preserve,” said Mike Tully, director of operations and public safety for the Lake County Forest Preserve District. Tully said this is the first time in the 20 years he has been with the district that the preserves closed because of snow. “We have been challenged to open a few times . . . normally we would go out overnight and snowplow,” Tully said. Public Affairs Manager Susan Hawkins said the preserves did close …

This is one Village that definitely should be reimbursed. They get an A+++ from me for their dedication and proficiency during the past blizzard. We received two phone calls from Libertyville Police Dept., making sure we knew what the Village was doing, asking us to please stay off the streets unless there was an emergency, keeping us posted on snow removal policies. Then we received a call from …   more ›
