District 128 Pool Users Adapt to New Schedule

Community High School District 128 closed pools at Libertyville and Vernon Hills high schools on Oct. 1.

This week is the start of figuring out new schedules for many pool users at Community High School District 128 pools. The district closed pools Oct. 1 at Libertyville and Vernon Hills high schools after it failed to get an extension to meet a pool compliance mandate. Some parents blame the district, while others say the state is also at fault for not communicating the changes well to the district. Regardless of who is to blame, the pool closures are more than just an inconvenience for swimmers — it also is eating into busy schedules. “I’m getting less time to myself with homework being piled on with less time in the day,” said Morgan Dickson, a junior who is one of the top swimmers at Libertyville High School. Dickson broke the school’s …

What a mess. Overall, I am very impressed with D128, however on this issue, the district completely blew it. They had years to comply with this very important safety issue, but did not. We have literally the only schools in the entire county that did not meet the deadline. If notification was such a problem, how did every other single school in the district get it...we did not?! That's bad enough…   more ›

The Libertyville swim team will need to swim away from home until the Libertyville High School pool has met the new requirements for pool drains and repairs.

The Libertyville High School swim teams competed at Stevenson High School on Tuesday. The team may not have the chance to have another home meet this season due to repairs needed on the Libertyville High School pool. A new law requires that all potentially dangerous drains be replaced by Oct. 1. Related articles

District 128 Seeks Aid to Extend Pool Closure Deadline

Community High School District 128 is urging parents and pool users to call Gov. Pat Quinn to avoid pool closures at Libertyville and Vernon Hills high schools on Oct. 1.

Community High School District 128 is urging parents and pool users to contact Gov. Pat Quinn to seek an extension of the Oct. 1 pool compliance deadline. If the deadline is not extended, the district will have to close its pools at Libertyville and Vernon Hills high schools Saturday because its drains do not meet federal regulations. The district’s are among 400 pools across the state that do not meet the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act of 2007, which requires new drains or covers that can't trap swimmers with powerful suctions, according to Chicago Tribune. Community High School District 128 Superintendent Prentiss Lea met with Illinois Department of Public Health officials Monday, hoping to gain headway on pool …

Linda, I think you miss the point of my comments. I am not trying to defend or help Dr. Lea or anyone who may be responsible for this mess. I fully support appropriate consequences being meted out by the school board. If you must find a lesson for our children in all of this, how about “if someone else creates a bad situation for me, rather than just grin and bear it, I should try to improve my …   more ›
