Donations will be collected from May 6-8 for the sale, which will be held May 10-11.
When the doors open at the United Methodist Women's Rummage Sale May 10, the anticipated large crowds waiting outside will be greeted by a well-organized sale, thanks to the efforts of nearly 150 volunteers. Those volunteers will spend the better part of next week accepting donations for the sale and then organizing the items into categories: housewares, linens, crafts, toys/games, electronics, books, clothes and more. Rummage Sale Co-Chair Janet Hartkop said a couple of volunteers even organize the clothing by color and the books by author. "When we open the doors on Friday morning, it's very organized," said Hartkop. "An hour later, it isn't." The women of United Methodist Church of Libertyville hold two rummage sales each year—one in …

At 82-years-old, June McCoy shows you are never too old to stop working. The work this Libertyville resident does benefits so many-- she supports senior housing, mentors youth and provides a warm place for the homeless. “I find work to be my social life,” McCoy said. She says her lessons about equality and helping others began as a child, watching her parents. Standing under the same tree where she waited for the school bus as a child, she recalls that her neighbors, who were African-American, had to ride in a beat up car to their one-room school, whereas she rode in a nicer pick-up truck to a two-room country school. At dinnertime, one of the children, who also worked for her parents, could not eat at the same table with her family. “But …

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused devastation along the central Gulf Coast states. Since the disaster, volunteers from United Methodist Church of Libertyville have gone to one hard-hit city, Gulfport, Miss. to help the residents and businesses rebuild. On Sept. 10, Welch along with eight other adult volunteers will go again their sixth time. Sixth Mission Trip to Gulf Coast Welch first traveled to the affected area as a volunteer when Red Cross made a request that 60,000 more volunteers were needed. What he remembers is the devastation, buildings knocked off their foundations, trees laid flat and roads covered in sand. “That little 20-mile strip of Gulfport that we saw, the coast was repeated over and over across thousands of miles. You …
