Hundreds Pay Last Respects to Trooper Sauter

  Members of the Vernon Hills Police Department were among hundreds of law enforcement agents who attended the funeral of Vernon Hills resident and Illinois State Trooper James Sauter this week. "I lost count of how many Illinois State Troopers were there after 350," said Officer Sharon Joseph, who shared these photos with Patch. Tributes to Sauter included a message on a digital tollway sign, a roadside salute by at least eight fire departments and an American flag hung over the road.

Updated: Man Faces Felony Charge After Pulling Gun, Getting Shot by Vernon Hills Police

Mundelein resident Howard R. Lazarus has been charged with felony aggravated assault. Police said he carried a note that indicated he wanted to die.

Updated at 10:40 a.m. April 3: A man who was shot early Wednesday morning by a Vernon Hills police officer has been charged with felony aggravated assault. Police said Howard R. Lazarus, 53, of 16 N. Bristol Court, Mundelein, entered the Vernon Hills Police Department just after midnight and said he wanted to file a report involving a car accident he had in Mundelein. When an officer offered to drive him to the Mundelein Police Department, police say Lazarus "pulled a handgun out of his coat pocket and pointed it at the officer." The Vernon Hills officer then drew his weapon and told Lazarus several times to drop his gun, according to a statement from the police department.
