Libertyville ranks 22nd according to Crain's tracking of household income in the zip codes of Metra train stations.
A look at income levels in suburban towns with Metra stops provides a glimpse at the disparity in wealth throughout the area, according to a map by Crain's Chicago Business Journal. Among all Chicago and suburban Metra stops, Libertyville ranked as the 22nd highest income with an average income of $109,416, according to Crain's. Libertyville residents are in the top 10 percent for highest incomes, according to Crain's. Neighboring Grayslake ranked as the 61st highest income with an average income of $86,825, while Vernon Hills ranked 50th with an average income of $90,325. Some Libertyville business owners are saying continued delays in road construction are affecting their bottom line.
IDOT says road work north of downtown Libertyville has been delayed as a result of April's record-breaking rainfall, which led to flooding issues throughout the area, reported the Chicago Tribune. Local business owners are growing weary of construction delays, telling the Tribune it's affecting their sales. Former Libertyville resident Ruben Contreras, 51, was convicted April 12 of the May 2002 first-degree murder of his wife, Graciala, reported the Chicago Tribune. Authorities said Contreras, who worked and lived at Daybreak Farm Stables in Libertyville, was returning to the stables with his 2-year-old son and 34-year-old estranged wife when they got into a fight and he smothered her with his hands so no one would hear her screams and call police, reported the Tribune. After the murder, Contreras dumped his wife's body in a nearby forest preserve and later fled to Mexico. Home sale prices in Libertyville have dropped slightly, according to a recent Chicago Magazine article. The article profiled what homes cost in several suburbs and Chicago neighborhoods. Along with Libertyville, home sale prices are also down in neighboring Grayslake, Lake Zurich and Buffalo Grove, but up in Vernon Hills. The magazine’s data shows the median sale price for a Libertyville home in 2012 was $400,000, down 1.5 percent from 2011, and 20.8 percent since 2006. There were 308 home sales last year in Libertyville, with homes staying on the market an average of 169 days, the magazine reports. The spring/summer season for the CATS Aquatic youth swim program begins in April. Those who want to be on the team are invited to tryouts from 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, March 18, at Vernon Hills High School, 145 Lakeview Parkway. Tryouts will be done on a first-come, first-serve basis. Results of those who have made the team will be posted on the CATS Aquatic Team website on Wednesday, March 21. Tryouts will take place Monday at Vernon Hills High School from 6-8 p.m. Take Route 60 to the Lakeview Parkway stop light west of Hawthorn Mall and turn south.
