ReplySo my husband just came home from a Colt's Coaches meeting and guess what? Sure enough he came back with all the propaganda I'd already read on here. Information such as that this league has been started by coaches who were voted off and something about Lake Villa background checks. I asked him how much of what he was repeating he knew as fact. Uh huh.

ReplyThere are definitely things that could have been handled differently. I can definitely see young adults who had been participating in underage drinking being hesitant to call the police or parents. I think as parents we need to instill in our children faith that their world won't end for doing something wrong. We need to encourage them to drink responsibly even while doing it illegally. I'm sure the friends weren't sure what to do under the circumstances and assumed their friend had made it somewhere safely.

ReplyWhat has really confused me during all of this is the continued references to the "quality education" our kids are receiving. Really??? Does no one look at the school report cards? Most of the Lake county school's accomplishments can be considered mediocre at best (or the nation for that matter). There is a huge concentration on those who academically struggle or on those who academically excel. And it seems that those who academically struggle are increasing every year. I am really on the fence about who's "side" I may be on. It just seems to me we are fighting the wrong fight. It would be wonderful if we could research those few schools in Lake County who are successfully graduating driven students and evaluate what they could be doing better than we are. Since most of those schools are in higher income areas then money may in fact be part of the equation. I feel certain it is not the entire reason.

@RonVerdi - and were you educated in this district? It seems perhaps you were as you do not seem to know the correct usage of the possessive pronoun "their."

@RonVerdi - oh how fast you assumed. We are a low tech house dear, not a single video game, not even a flat screen television. Spent many hours with my child since birth, hooked on phonics, Kumon, the works. Just hoped to get additional help from the professionals since she struggles. Just couldn't find any expertise in the current school system.

I think the Grayslake teachers could really prove how excellent their abilities are if they could teach their students (and the parents) that "your" is a possessive pronoun not a pronoun / verb contraction.

Quality education? They boast that 87% of their students perform at or above the district "average" but when I questioned getting additional help for my daughter who was performing in the 23 percentile- their response - oh, we still consider that within the normal range and not requiring additional help. Their percentages are skewed and I question the "quality" referred to by RonVerdi.
