Libertyville Mayor Proposes Referendum to Fix Streets

The Public Works Department estimates that it would take more than $32 million to fix most Libertyville streets.

Mayor Terry Weppler says Libertyville roads are in pretty bad shape and he hopes to issue bonds to fix that.

Weppler plans to place a referendum on the March 2012 ballot asking voters whether they support a bond issue to fix village roads.

Fixing the roads, however, won’t be cheap.

The Public Works Department estimates that more than 70 percent of Libertyville-maintained roads are below average and could cost some $32 million.

“The economy played a large role in how the roads deteriorated,” Wepper wrote in a village newsletter. “The village hasn’t raised taxes, thus has received less money in the downturned economy, and has had to defer road maintenance in order to maintain a balanced budget.”
